SAN DIEGO — Even as the anticipation for Dustin May’s return from Tommy John surgery built this summer, the Dodgers tried to tame expectations by pointing out they really didn’t know what to expect from the 25-year-old right-hander or where he might fit in their postseason plans.In his fourth start since rejoining the Dodgers’ rotation, May allowed four runs in five innings and the San Diego Padres beat the Dodgers, 5-4, in 10 innings on a soggy Friday night in San Diego.
If May’s return so far has been a box of chocolates, the first two starts were creamy nougat. Facing the Miami Marlins both times, he allowed just one earned run on five hits and three walks while striking out 13 in 11 innings. Sixty-six percent of his pitches were strikes. May only had himself to blame for his uneven performance Friday. Or Mookie Betts. Or home plate umpire Jim Wolf.
But Wolf called it ball four. There was no play at second base and instead of being out of the inning on a strike-him-out/throw-him-out double play – or simply facing a two-out, man-on-second situation – May faced Trent Grisham with two on and one out.
