An expert at the Energy Saving Trust has addressed the myth that having your heating on low all day saves money
Millions of households will be turning on their heating for the first time in months, but thanks to the ongoing cost of living crisis, many will be worried about high energy bills. Despite a slight decrease in the estimated average annual energy bill, households will still pay around £1,923 this October to next December.
Addressing the myth, Joanna O'Loan, knowledge manager at the Energy Saving Trust told PA news agency: "If you have gas central heating, it's generally advisable and most cost-effective to turn your boiler on and off when you need it. It's cheaper to reheat your home than it is to keep it on low all day when you're not there.
She explained: "Whichever heating system you have, blasting it briefly on high isn't advisable. Setting your thermostat higher doesn't make your home heat up more quickly, but it does increase the risk of overheating your home, wasting energy and money. If you are warm enough, try turning your thermostat down by one degree – this could save you around £100 a year."
