My business partner for 45 years, Mel Katz, and I try to carpool into the office whenever we can.
Both our families live in Del Mar, which is convenient, though often it doesn’t work out because of our busy schedules. But we try.
That’s when we give updates and gently quiz each other — Mel calls it cross-examine — on the latest trends of the staffing industry. Our official policy is that we suggest two days per week in the office, but we do not measure or manage to that. When two employees are being considered for layoff, and one employee’s productivity is much higher than another, that’s the easier decision. Higher productivity wins out every time.
But, says Mel, that’s not fair to remote workers whose productivity equals that of a hybrid worker. True enough, but we’re all human with our own biases and comfort levels, and that’s a factor when it comes to promotions and layoff decisions.Naturally, we tend to revert back to productivity metrics because they can be measured and quantified. Those metrics should be easily understood by both the employer and the employee.
