.” The letter did not specify what content the state found objectionable.

Still, Florida Commissioner Diaz Jr. characterized the course as “woke indoctrination masquerading as education.” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis also framed the course as indoctrination, not education, saying the following:told students at a Florida charter school Monday The FDOE cited the writings and comments of authors who said things critical of America, capitalism, patriarchy, white supremacy, and other issues as “concerns” justifying the rejection of the course. Angela Davis is described as a “self-avowed Communist and Marxist.” Bell Hooks uses the phrase “white supremacist capitalist patriarchy” in her works. The reparations movement seeks recompense for centuries of unpaid labor.

Soon after, we are introduced to our “Founding Fathers.” These distinguished gentlemen of profound intellect and high character, one of whom our school is very likely named after, were patriots and heroes, willing to risk life and limb against the mighty British Empire, energized by universal truths such as “all men are created equal.” These brave men scratched, clawed, and persisted until they achieved victory over the tyranny of the British.

The AP African American Studies course was rejected because it was going to introduce students to the ideas of those who have been critical of America. Through this lens, we see that the FDOE was not acting to prevent indoctrination. Instead, it was acting in order to protect the indoctrination that is already occurring in our schools.

This has impacted many educators, but there are some in the state who refuse to back down. Dr. Marvin Dunn, one of the preeminent historians in Florida, is one of those saying, 'Bring it on.' Professor Marvin Dunn, author of, 'A History of Florida Through Black Eyes,' joins Joy Reid to discuss.
