Trump has to pick up a lot of close states to get to 270 electoral votes, a poll indicated.

That did mark a modest improvement compared to the year prior, in which Trump hit 50 percent in just 12 states.

The president found his strongest support in 2018 in the South and Mountain West regions, Gallup found in the survey released last week. States with the highest approval rating for Trump were West Virginia at 62 percent approval, Wyoming , North Dakota , Alaska , Mississippi , Alabama , Tennessee , Kentucky and Arkansas .

Trump's lowest levels of support mostly came from the Northeast. States with the lowest approval were Hawaii at 26 percent, Vermont , Massachusetts , California , Maryland , New York , Illinois , New Jersey , New Hampshire , Rhode Island , Washington and Connecticut . President Donald Trump speaks in the State Dining Room of the White House in Washington, D.C., on February 25, 2019.Should Trump win each state with an approval rating above 50 percent—a perfectly reasonable assumption—that would account for 102 electoral votes. The states where his approval rating is below 40 percent account for 201 electoral votes. It takes 270 electoral votes to win the presidency.

"In order to get to the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency, Trump would have to win all but one or two of the states in which his 2018 approval rating was between 41 [percent] and 49 [percent]," noted Gallup. "Some of the more challenging states to win from among this group, based on that approval rating, would be Texas ; Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan ; and Arizona and Florida .
