Republicans have already started pointing the finger at the Democrats
The immediate impact of the attempted assassination of former president Donald Trump on America’s election campaign could be felt less than three hours after the crackle of gunfire interrupted the Republican leader’s rally.
Their loathing for one another has never been hidden from public view. But in a matter of minutes, the shooting saw Biden forced to pivot from a pugilist in the presidential contest, to a head of state expressing concern and anxiety about the safety of his rival. The Biden campaign announced it was “pausing all outbound communications, and working to pull down our television ads as quickly as possible”, spokesman Kevin Munoz told reporters.
For Biden, who has spent a fortnight trying to save his candidacy following his disastrous performance in last month’s debate, the shooting creates enormous fresh hurdles to overcome. Democrats anticipate that at least in the short term, Trump will benefit from a rise in support rooted in sympathy for the former president’s injuries and the defiant, iconic images captured at the scene of the attack.
