McGuinness talked about what the win meant to his people shortly after the final whistle in Donegal's dramatic penalty shoot-out Ulster final win over Armagh in May
Quite often since he returned as Donegal manager, Jim McGuinnness has referenced getting his players to buy into a love of place and people and who they represent.
“That's the whole thing about inter-county football. Place and identity, that's the whole show. Where you come from. Who you represent. They are out there today and are very fortunate to be the 15 or the 26 representing Donegal.'' Instead, it took place in the Abbey Hotel - one of Donegal GAA's sponsors - last Friday, with senior County Board officials joining players and management of both teams.
“This was a golden opportunity to pay tribute to our GAA stars - that is only common sense - but why make it a secret affair? Supporters who pay to go into the games would love to have a chance to buy a ticket as was the case previously and meet up with Jim McGuinness and Mickey McCann and the players. They are their heroes but keeping them in the dark is just petty.
