Her great-great-grandfather immigrated from Lebanon to Jacksonville when the city was rebuilding after the disastrous Great Fire of 1901.
In one of the lighter moments of the ceremony, the overhead screen played a video recording of Deegan performing a rap song during a similar event for Sadler. She said Saturday that in addition to investing in neighborhoods, her agenda will focus on fully funding a riverfront park system and making Jacksonville more resilient in the face of climate change.
“It's not rocket science,” she said. “It is literally just letting people become more participatory in their own government. So we've tried to do that through the transition committees. We've got a lot of people and committees we're going to do that with town halls by bringing people into City Hall and vice versa.”Deegan will seek to make good on her “Change for Good” agenda while working with a City Council where 14 of the 19 members are Republicans.
