Stanford research reveals a previously overlooked contributor to Thwaites Glacier's ice loss.
The findings highlight the need for closer glacier monitoring to determine how much sea level rise the glacier will cause globally. The speed and thickness of the glacier have undoubtedly changed throughout the ages, according to numerous earlier studies. However, the glacier's width, which affects how much ice melts into the sea at any given time, has received less attention in research.
Now, this most recent research makes use of numerical modeling to demonstrate how the eastern and western borders of Thwaites Glacier's main trunk may be impacted by the glacier's quick but uneven thinning. "We are considering relatively small changes in driving stress as would realistically occur in the coming two decades," Summers and colleagues wrote in aThey argue that although it only accounts for roughly 2 percent of the glacier's overall width, the slight broadening could hasten its continuous"If the widening trend were to continue and were to accelerate, then we'd better know.
"We are very intentionally focusing on the next two decades to enable testability and continued model development," stated Suckale.
