I’ve lost count of the times people have asked me how I am.
I have been doing this work for almost 40 years. It is not the late nights or the fatigue of this high intensity work that weighs on me. The greatest toll on me and my team members comes from witnessing the horrific injuries we saw on the patients from the Uvalde school shooting last month and the Sutherland Springs church shooting in 2017. The toll is worse because these tragedies are preventable.
How are we average Texans responsible? When faced with a complex problem like firearm-related violence, we make one of two irresponsible choices. We retreat to our social bubble, where everyone agrees with us. Or we simply throw up our hands and tell ourselves it’s too complicated and we can’t make a difference.
