SAN FRANCISCO — The Boston Celtics’ top-rated defense poses the biggest obstacle standing between the Warriors and a fourth title in eight years. Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart is head of that snake.
“He’s reading angles, he’s guarding all five positions,” Kerr said of Smart. “If he switches on to a five man, he’s so strong that he can hold him off. He’s quick enough to chase point guards around, big enough to guard wings. He can literally guard one through five in the modern game. So he’s appropriately named. Very smart player and very versatile.”
Kerr — who caught some flack in the Western Conference semifinals for saying Memphis’ Dillon Brooks “broke the code” when he broke Gary Payton II’s elbow fouling him mid-air — called the Smart play on Curry “dangerous.” Playing with Green for nearly a decade, Curry knows the difference between a dirty play and an aggressive play.
He earned the first flagrant throwing down Houston’s Michael Beasley and the second when he kicked Oklahoma City’s Steven Adams in the conference finals. He was issued his fourth points after Game 4 for a retaliatory swipe at LeBron James in Game 4 of the finals — he sat out a crucial Game 5 that led to the Warriors blowing a 3-1 lead in the finals to Cleveland.
