Shad Ryan Mayfield says he’s roping with “a chip on his shoulder” after finishing fifth in the championship round last year at RodeoHouston — leaving him one spot away from competing in the $50,000 Shootout.After surviving his tie-down roping set last year, then making the final day via the wild-card round, Mayfield won two rounds in Super Series V and emerged as the series champion with $6,500 on Tuesday at NRG Stadium.
Mayfield, 22, of Clovis, N.M., grew up on a ranch, rope in hand. Dad Sylvester Mayfield is a two-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier who competed in RodeoHouston when it still was held at the Astrodome. Shad began competing at 7 years old, then bought his Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association card and turned pro at 18. He qualified for his first NFR as rookie — then won his first world title in 2020.
