The driver of a second car was treated at a local hospital for non-fatal injuries, investigators said.

A driver died Sunday morning and a passenger was in critical condition after a two-car crash in Newark, investigators said.

Police responded to the crash on U.S. Route 1 & 9 North and McClellan Street near Newark Liberty International Airport shortly before 3:30 a.m. and found that two cars had collided, according to a statement from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. The driver of one car, identified as Cheikh Faye, 35, of Weehawken, was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:47 a.m. and Faye’s passenger was taken toand was listed in critical condition as of Monday afternoon, the office said. The passenger was not identified.

The driver of the second car was rushed to Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth and treated for non-fatal injuries, authorities said. No other details about the crash were released Monday as it remained under investigation by the office, which asked anyone with information to call their tips line at 1-877-TIPS-4EC or 1-877-847-7432.
