in Pequannock Township — killing its lone occupant, investigators said.
The 2020 Chevy Traverse was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Route 23 North and Alexander Avenue shortly after 5 a.m. when it was hit by the truck driven by 45-year-old Newark resident Angel Carabello-Maldona, according to a joint statement from the Pequannock Township Police and the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office.
The car then caught fire, but Carabello-Maldona and a bystander were able to pull the driver, who was not identified, from the flames, the agencies said. Officers and medical personnel attempted rescue efforts, but they were unsuccessful and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
Video surveillance revealed that Carabello-Maldona was using his cell phone at the time of the crash, and he was subsequently charged with reckless vehicular homicide, police said. He was taken to the Morris County Correctional Facility pending his first court appearance, the office said. Attorney information for him was not immediately available.
