Police raided a house and found a drone loaded with ketamine, cannabis, and tobacco
Prosecutor Robert Wyn Jones told Liverpool Crown Court how officers noticed an unusual spike in drone activity around the prison in April 2022 and began to draw up a pattern of where the flights were coming from. Through their investigation, it was found Anthony Sweeney was running an operation that saw drugs including tobacco, cannabis and ketamine as well as mobile phones flown into the jail at least 30 times.
The court heard Merseyside Police officers forced their way into a home on the street where Leanne Whiting, of Southport Road in Bootle, and Rebecca Williams, of Jurby Court in Warrington, were stopped from running out of the back door. Inside the kitchen, police found a drone prepped to make another delivery of a package containing ketamine, cannabis, tobacco and two mobile phones.
Whiting, 37, allowed her home on King Avenue to be used as a base for the gang for "at least half" of the flights recorded. Williams, who was in a relationship with Sweeney for a brief period, drove her partner around twice towards the end of the conspiracy. Doherty, represented by Andrew Jebb, urged the court to act leniently on the 26-year-old who has three children that rely on him. But he accepted the custody threshold had been passed.
Jonathan Duffy, who represented Williams, said she had also gone through "traumatic circumstances in her life" that led to her decisions. She was pleased to tell the court how she works full-time and has a stable home in a new area.
