The weekend death of a jail inmate after a medical episode a week earlier is under investigation, authorities said.
In a statement Tuesday evening, an Alameda County sheriff’s spokesperson said that deputies saw inmate Ali Muhammad, 71, show signs of distress during an assigned-unit recreation period a few minutes before noon October 24.
Muhammad, who suffered from prior medical issues, went into cardiac arrest, and paramedics and Alameda County Fire Department firefighters provided life-saving measures before taking him to a hospital, where he was placed on life support. Muhammad had been booked into jail July 16, 2020, by Oakland police after a warrant service for an attempted murder investigation.
