The Duchess of Edinburgh will be reading 'Specs for Rex' on CBeebies to mark World Sight Day. The story follows a young lion who is reluctant to wear his new glasses.
Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh is set to inspire little ones and adults alike with a heartwarming CBeebies bedtime story next week. For World Sight Day on Tuesday, October 10, Sophie will be reading Specs For Rex by Yasmeen Ismail, which tells the tale of a young lion reluctant to wear his new glasses. In a touching trailer, she shared: 'Millions of us need glasses to see the world clearly. World Sight Day is a reminder to all of us to take care of our eyes, whether we need glasses or not.
Our eyes are precious, and our sight is something to cherish and look after. So, let's remember to take care of our eyes this World Sight Day.' Her chosen book is all about Rex, who is scared to wear his new glasses - which are big, round and red - to school so tries to hide them. However, the cub story has a happy ending as his new specs end up winning him a gold star, a new friend and most importantly, help him to see better. Two years ago Kate Middleton, a mum of three, captured hearts with her reading of The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark by Jill Tomlinson for the same programme. She delivered her story to mark World Mental Health Week, which had a 'growing together' theme that year. The Princess of Wales' choice told the story of a young barn owl called Plop, who is helped by others in the forest to grow in confidence and overcome his personal fears. At the time, Patricia Hidalgo, Director of BBC Children’s and Education said: “I couldn’t be more proud to have The Duchess read a CBeebies Bedtime Story as we mark the 20th anniversary of our CBeebies and CBBC channels. It’s such a special and relevant tale and perfectly represents this years’ Children’s Mental Health week theme.'
