Astros manager Dusty Baker says he spent one-game suspension in Minute Maid Park 'dungeon'
Suspended for Tuesday night’s game against the Mariners following a benches-clearing incident on Monday, Baker said he watched his team’s 4-1 win from a “dungeon” in the bowels of Minute Maid Park while adhering to a major league rule he unknowingly broke last season.
Baker did not specify where the “dungeon” is located, but put it on par with the proverbial “doghouse” in some marriages. When he incurred a one-game suspension in San Francisco last August after a similar incident, Baker watched the team’s game from the clubhouse at Oracle Park. “They told me I wasn’t supposed to be sitting in the clubhouse last year, it fell through the cracks,” Baker said on Wednesday. “I couldn’t sit in the clubhouse, either, so I had to go to the dungeon.”
Baker said he dressed in full uniform — wristbands and all — for a viewing experience he called “real weird.” Major League Baseball did not issue their punishments until an hour and a half before Tuesday’s game. “It was very productive,” Baker said. “I got to see the sequence of pitches, how they were pitching guys. Got to see guys who were struggling, try to help them and see why they’re struggling. I put another hat on while I was watching the game.”
