With Astros' coaching staff unsettled, Dusty Baker hopes to have Joe Espada back
Astros manager Dusty Baker hopes to have bench coach Joe Espada on staff for a fourth season together., said he is in discussions to determine which members of his coaching staff will return with him in 2023.
Foremost among them is Astros bench coach Joe Espada, who has held that position in Houston since the 2018 season and is not under contract with the club for next season.for managerial openings over the past several years. He interviewed for two managerial openings during the Astros’ 2022 playoff run but did not land either job.
Baker said the Astros are working on bringing Espada back next season. The manager credited Espada for his role in organizing spring training, and in helping former Astros shortstop Carlos Correa and successor Jeremy Peña win back-to-back American League Gold Glove awards in 2021 and 2022. “He means a lot to the staff because this guy's a worker,” Baker said. “That’s work. That's a lot of effort. That's a lot of time, especially on the infield, because that's where you lose or win a bunch of games. And also having him next to me in the dugout, I can run stuff by him or he runs stuff by me. He knows when to talk to me and he knows, after a while, he knows when to not say anything to me, which is as important as knowing when to say something to you.
