The DVLA has strict rules in place for drivers of a certain age
Drivers born in certain years are being cautioned that they may be unable to drive legally unless they adhere to a particular DVLA regulation that is not widely known.
Age UK, a prominent organisation advocating for the elderly, alerts those of advanced age that despite feeling confident behind the wheel, it is mandatory to renew their driving licence upon reaching 70, and subsequently every three years. The advice from Age UK to drivers born prior to 1954 is clear: "When you reach the age of 70, your driving licence expires but this doesn't necessarily mean you have to stop driving. If you want to continue, you just need to renew your licence.
Contrary to what some might believe, taking another driving test at the age of 70 isn't required. However, you will need to declare your medical fitness when you renew your licence. Those with health issues or disabilities might also undergo assessments regarding their ability to drive. The DVLA aims to issue a D46P application form to drivers about 90 days before they turn 70.
Moreover, Age UK advises motorists to keep in mind: "Don't forget to apply for any extra categories of vehicle covered on your old licence if you still want to be able to drive them. There might be extra costs for these but if you don't apply for these extra categories you'll only be able to drive a car in future", reports Birmingham Live.
If the DVLA doesn't provide you with an application form, you have several options: download a D1 form online, print and complete it; order a D1 form online, fill it out and send it to the DVLA; visit your local Post Office and request a D1 form; or directly ask the DVLA for a driving licence application form.
