A recent report has revealed that up to 330,000 women have been left with a smaller state pension thanks to a DWP error
The challenge now is finding the women who are owed this money. DWP routinely destroyed records of child benefit claims after five years so the information needed has long disappeared. Child benefit and NI contributions are now the responsibility of HMRC. It hopes to identify those potentially affected by this autumn and will then invite them to apply for HRP. If that request is approved DWP will then revise their state pension.
It promises a “communication campaign” to encourage those who may have been underpaid to come forward. DWP expects one in 10 will never apply for their extra pension and also estimates that 60,000 of the women to whom it owes money have already died. Apply on form CF411 – available online at gov.uk search ‘CF411’. It will be a frustrating process but should speed up thousands of pounds in backdated payments and a bigger pension for the rest of their lives. An office hours helpline is on 0300 200 3500.
A hundred thousand married women and widows did not get their pension properly boosted by their spouse’s NI contributions and tens of thousands of people over 80 were not given the special non-contributory pension they are entitled to at that age if their state pension is low or non-existent. The NAO estimated in 2021 that 134,000 people were owed £1bn and were due an average of £8,900 each.
