The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued an urgent warning to anyone who receives a text message from the government department as fraudsters are on the prowl
The Department for Work and Pensions has issued an urgent scam warning via its social media platforms, aimed at millions of individuals who receive various benefits such as State Pension, Universal Credit, Personal Independence Payment , Attendance Allowance, or Jobseeker's Allowance .
In a statement shared on Twitter and Facebook, the Department advised: "Be aware of scam text messages claiming to be from @dwpgovuk. Always be careful about links and never share personal or financial details, only engage with trusted official sources." With the cost of living crisis ongoing and the festive season approaching, online scammers are potentially escalating their efforts in impersonation fraud, previously targeting individuals with bogus texts about 'unclaimed cost of living payments' and the Warm Home Discount, often including deceitful 'direct links' to lure victims — a method not used by the DWP. Universal Credit users are typically contacted via their online journal by their designated Work Coach.
