Families have criticised the high level of deductions
The Department for Work and Pensions has issued an update regarding Universal Credit payment cuts after families raised concerns about the high level of deductions imposed. This comes after the Institute for Public Policy Research recently said the cuts in benefit levels and caps on maximum amounts over the years have not been in line with the current cost of living.
It comes as the Trussell Trust, which manages more than 1,300 local food bank centres across the UK, criticised Universal Credit and published research saying millions of people relying on the benefit to survive were unable to make ends meet.
Guy Opperman, Minister for Employment at the DWP, issued a written response saying the maximum amount that can be taken out of someone's benefits is now much lower. And he said anyone struggling with the level of deductions can ask about lower repayments.
