The DWP green paper consultation will end on 11.59pm on July 22 with exactly 50 days left, with the Government asking people to respond and give their views

The Department for Work and Pensions has set a 50-day deadline for responses in the lead-up to a significant overhaul of the Personal Independence Payment system, which will see changes to eligibility and assessments. The consultation on the DWP green paper is due to conclude at 11.59pm on July 22, leaving exactly 50 days for input.

This green paper is focused on the reform of PIP and includes proposals such as altering the eligibility criteria and revamping the assessment process to more accurately reflect the needs of disabled individuals and those with health conditions. Additionally, the paper suggests a redesign of the PIP assessment to better correlate with a claimant's specific health condition. Action for ME, a charity, has expressed concern: "We understand that these proposals will cause a significant level of concern for people with disabilities and we are working to ensure that the voices of people with ME are heard and represented throughout the consultation process.

Proposals are on the table to overhaul the current welfare system, including scrapping cash payments in favour of vouchers or a catalogue system, as well as revising eligibility criteria and assessments.

"We owe it to those most struggling to make sure the benefit system provides the best support to those who need it. And with costs skyrocketing, it is time to bring the welfare system into the post-lockdown age."
