The Department for Work and Pensions rules for couples claiming Universal Credit have branded 'complicated' by Citizens Advice.
The independent organisation warns that your Universal Credit payments could be affected if you move in with a partner. With the cost of living crisis continuing and mortgage rates hitting their highest level in 15 years, many couples may be considering moving in with their partners to help reduce mortgage and rental costs as well as other household bills.
Citizens Advice explained that if you decide to move in together, you maybe paid a different Universal Credit amount as a couple. It writes: "The rules are complicated. If you were both getting Universal Credit, you’ll both need to report that you’ve moved in with a partner. It added: "You won't need to start a new Universal Credit claim but you’ll need to link your account to your partner’s. You can do this when you log in to your Universal Credit account.
"If you can’t see how to do this or you don’t have an online account, contact your work coach. If you were getting Universal Credit but your partner wasn’t, they’ll need to open an account and link it to yours - this turns it into a joint claim.Citizens Advice adds if any one of the couple was getting Pension Credit or any of the benefits Universal Credit replaces, those payments will stop, BirminghamLive reports.
Citizens Advice also says that income and savings will be taken into account for joint claims. It writes: "You'll get less Universal Credit if you get money from work or other places, or if you have more than £6,000 in savings or other investments - called ‘capital’.You can read more on the Citizens Advice website here.
