Millions are getting letters through their letterbox - and if they don't take action they will lose their benefits
The Department for Work and Pensions has made changes to the advice for anyone who gets a letter telling them they must move to Universal Credit. Eight million people are receiving notification through their letter this year to tell them they are moving.
Now in a change to the government website the DWP has added a stark warning if people don't claim within the three month deadline: "If you choose not to claim Universal Credit now, your existing benefits will still end. You can claim Universal Credit later, however normal Universal Credit eligibility rules will apply, for example you will not be entitled to transitional protection."
The Department for Work and Pensions said on the subject of tax credits: "If you receive tax credits, you can make a Universal Credit claim even if you have money, savings and investments of more than £16,000. After 12 months, normal eligibility rules will apply. You will not be eligible for Universal Credit if you still have more than £16,000 in money, savings and investments.
Earlier this year Work and Pensions Topical Questions in the House of Commons was told that people are losing out on £3,200 a year by failing to switch their benefits over. It was thought that about a quarter of people were not actually applying for the change. How you’re paid Universal Credit is paid once a month, usually into your bank, building society or credit union account.
