Exclusive: Dylan’s New Nightmare director Cecil Laird reassures fans who are concerned about Robert Englund being replaced by Dave McRae.

The director of the A Nightmare on Elm Street fan film Dylan’s New Nightmare reassures fans who are concerned about somebody replacing Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger. Despite appearing in multiple projects prior to 1984, Englund didn’t receive worldwide recognition until he played Freddy Krueger in Wes Craven’s original A Nightmare on Elm Street. Englund would return for six sequels and a crossover movie with Jason Voorhees, solidifying him as an icon in the horror genre.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT When speaking exclusively with Screen Rant at Mad Monster Party Arizona, the director spoke about McCrae taking over the role for the fan film. Knowing that people would be skeptical of someone other than Englund being under the makeup, Laird revealed that he thinks McCrae’s performance will allow fans to look past the recast and only see Freddy.

If you’re concerned about someone else playing Freddy besides Robert Englund, I would say give Dave McCrae a chance. I think when you see him, you’re not gonna see anyone other than Freddy. I just hope enough people will at least give it a look because I think he’s gonna sell it, no problem. Why It’s So Hard to Replace Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger While multiple actors have played other horror icons like Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees, Englund remained a constant throughout the franchise until the remake in 2010. While the mannerisms between the Jason and Michael actors were noticeable to die-hard horror fans, it was much easier for studios to recast the characters since they were behind a mask.

Englund is officially retired as Freddy Krueger, so Dylan’s New Nightmare had no choice but to recast the iconic slasher villain. Thankfully McRae’s performance felt in-line with Freddy’s darker persona in Wes Craven’s New Nightmare without coming across as an impression of Englund. It’s unknown who will play Freddy next or when the franchise will continue, but at least McRae’s performance proves another actor can don the glove and fedora when the time comes.
