Budget cuts could impact elementary music programs
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - After making several cuts this year, due to a budget shortfall, the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District is considering adjustments to the Band and Orchestra programs in elementary schools around the district.
LaPlaunt stated there will be no itinerant Band and Orchestra instructors at elementary schools for the 2022-2023 school year. She went on to say, “However, we can discuss and begin plans for an “Introduction to Band & Orchestra” 2nd-semester built into the 5th-grade curriculum. This would help students prepare for 6th grade at the middle school, potentially for three full years before high school.
Other topics she covered in the e-mail pertained to music positions posted for the upcoming year, and what will happen to the general music teachers at the schools being closed. “General music teachers at Joy and Nordale will have the same opportunity as all teachers at those schools to either apply for open positions for which they are qualified or to be placed through the Involuntary Transfer Status process,” said LaPlaunt.
She wrote, “Work is still required to determine what middle school 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade music will look like and how the staffing will be used.”In early February, Chief School Administrator Karen Melin sent an email to district families informing them the board had voted to close three elementary schools, repurpose one elementary school and move middle schools to grades 6-8.
