ALAMEDA — Alameda’s temporary freeze on rent increases is coming to an end.
Landlords will be allowed to notify tenants of rent increases starting May 1 and then raise rents 30 days later by up to 2.7%. The amount allowed each year may vary; it is linked to the consumer price index. “I think what the staff has suggested is a middle-ground approach that is reasonable, takes in the concerns of renters and takes in the concerns of smaller mom and pop landlords,” Councilmember Tony Daysog said. “I think that we should begin to move forward.”
Landlord EB Chang told the council Tuesday that the rent she collects is a needed source of income for her. “I understand the issues that some of the landlords are facing, but I think we need to at least take some compassion for the renters that are struggling with the pandemic,” local resident Jack Bowling said. “I just want to put my voice behind all of those that are suffering.”
