Investigators have released a report into what happened
The back of a Boeing 737 leaving East Midlands Airport hit the runway when it took off because the crew had used the wrong calculation. Crash investigators said the cargo plane's crew had mistakenly used outdated forms to determine the speed at which the pilot should pull back on the yoke for take-off.
The report concludes: "The crew used incorrect loading figures to calculate the aircraft performance at departure. The aircraft was approximately 10 tonnes heavier than anticipated, and the therefore commenced the take-off rotation 15 knots too slow," reports Leicestershire Live. The report revealed that paperwork confusion arose after the pilot requested a de-icing crew to rectify some errors in various documents. The AAIB stated: "The crew arrived at the aircraft at 0430hrs and the commander decided that it required de-icing. This was carried out by two separate vehicles, each of which provided receipts to the commander.
"The sheaf of papers given to the crew also contained a load sheet for the same aircraft on a previous flight. Although not recognising this at the time, the crew used the figures from this incorrect load sheet to calculate the take-off performance figures using the manufacturers Onboard Performance Tool .
