The Met Office warns of heavy snow hitting the East Midlands on Sunday, January 5th, following a cold snap with temperatures plummeting and widespread frost.
The Met Office has warned that widespread snow could hit the East Midlands within days. Temperatures are expected to plummet over the next few days and the weather agency predicts that there could be widespread snow across the East Midlands on Sunday, January 5. Temperatures are expected to dip on Wednesday, January 1 after heavy rain. The Met Office has also warned of a widespread frost overnight on January 1 into Thursday, January 2.
In terms of the forecast for Wednesday, January 1, the Met Office states: 'Lingering rain, sleet and hill snow in north moving southwards and easing. Then mostly dry, clear and cold, with a widespread frost. Wintry showers and windy near coasts, however. Minimum temperature -2 °C.' The rest of the week is expected to remain cold, with many areas of the region struggling to get above freezing, but it will be mostly dry with sunny spells. However, it is likely to be more cloudy and windy near the coasts, with wintry showers. The outlook for Friday to Sunday states: 'Very cold with widespread frosts, perhaps severe. Mostly dry with sunny spells, but coastal and Peak District wintry showers. Perhaps more widespread snow Sunday, but low confidence. Breezy at times.' The current forecast shows that light snow is predicted to fall in Nottingham and Derby on Sunday from 9am, but from 12pm onwards this is expected to turn to sleet. More sleet showers have been forecast for Monday, January 6, as temperatures remain low
