Taking to Instagram, Wright explained that in 2017 he reached out to Friedkin to ask how it felt to have directed “the greatest car chase of all time” in reference to the famous chase sequence featured in The French Connection. Friedkin's answer indicated his sequence was a response to the car chase in the 1968 Steve McQueen movie Bullitt, while also crediting the silent ofilm star Buster Keaton as a source of inspiration.
