Editorial: More Abbott border antics? Get serious about immigration.

FILE - Texas Gov. Greg Abbott speaks during a news conference on March 10, 2022, in Weslaco, Texas. TTexas Gov. Greg Abbott on Thursday, July 7, 2022, authorized state forces to apprehend and transport migrants to the U.S.-Mexico border, claiming the enforcement powers of federal agents and pushing the legal boundaries of the Republican's escalating efforts to curb the rising number of crossings.. Yessir, there’s no doubt about it, Greg Abbott is one tough son-of-a-gun.

Just where Abbott’s battle of the border bulge will take place is not all that clear, but according to an order issued last week by Texas Military Department officials and obtained by the Tribune and Military Times, around 50 members of the Texas National Guard will be trained to operate the vehicles at 10 different stations. Once they get their APC driver’s licenses, so to speak, they’ll surge into action.

That word “repel” is part of the Texas tough-talk vocabulary. Brave Ukrainian soldiers repel the Russian army; Texan soldiers repel men and women desperately seeking a better life. So, here’s where we agree with the governor: This nation’s immigration system is a mess — and has been for years. Texas border communities and Texas landowners along the border are feeling the impact of large numbers of immigrants coming across the Rio Grande.
