As another election settles, we once again are struck by the deep divisions in our country and are at a loss as to how to bring people together.
. At a time of surging immigration and sky-high inflation, Abbott gave voice to these concerns with a poignant urgency. And as demonstrated with his campaign’s emphasis on South Texas, he has made inroads with Latino voters. He is the governor for all Texans, and so we hope he returns to a more moderate form that best serves all Texans.
While Republicans showcased their statewide strength, it was the opposite story at the local level. Longtime District Judge Peter Sakai, a Democrat, will serve as the next Bexar County judge,Republican Trish DeBerry. District Attorney Joe D. Gonzales, also a Democrat, cruised to victory over Republican challenger Marc LaHood.
Sakai will follow longtime Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff, who is the most consequential political figure in the modern San Antonio era. When we think of Wolff, we think of grand and uplifting projects. These include the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, and the 8-mile Mission Reach and the corresponding San Pedro Creek. We think of his passion for criminal justice reform and a refreshingly blunt political style.
