The horse drawn carriages are a nod to a time which no longer exists.

SAN ANTONIO — The clop, clop, clop, clop, of horses’ hooves on downtown streets echoes back to a time in San Antonio when that sound wasn’t drowned out by the rumbling of engines, blaring of horns, and screeching of brakes.

It’s safer and more efficient that they no longer share busy San Antonio streets with motor vehicles. Ban the horse carriages, the editorial board writes. The horse drawn carriages which have been meandering through downtown San Antonio for decades are quaint and romantic and the horses are beautiful creatures. But they are a nod to a time which no longer exists.

We support a proposal in City Council that would ban horse-drawn carriages, relegating them to the past which they’ve done a wonderful job attempting to recreate. Submitted by Councilman Jalen-McKee-Rodriguez and Councilwoman Phyllis Viagran, the plan would phase out the use of the horses while transitioning to electric carriages and pedicabs by next December.

Understandably, the carriage owners oppose the ban. Although we disagree with the argument that the ban would hurt tourism — Who visits San Antonio solely to ride in horse-drawn carriages? — we want the proposal to address two of their very important concerns. One would be to transition current drivers to the horseless carriages and the other is to ensure that none of the horses are euthanized because homes aren’t found for them.
