Briones’ positions on high-profile issues such as misdemeanor bail reform and crime...
Lesley Briones, candidate for Harris County Precinct 4 commissioner, waits to speaks with voters outside the polling site at Trini Mendenhall Community Center, 1414 Wirt Road, Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2022, in Houston. The crowded Democratic race for Harris County Precinct 4 commissioner has narrowed, but the runoff remains competitive.
Both candidates have served the county in different ways. A Yale Law School graduate, Briones, 41, was a Harris County Court at Law Judge until resigning to run for commissioner. Rice University graduate Chou, 31, meanwhile, worked for high-profile Democrats, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, before heading to the Harris County clerk’s office, where he helped pull off the now-banned drive-thru voting effort that saw historic turnout numbers.
In February, we found Briones’ positions on high-profile issues such as misdemeanor bail reform and crime to be thoughtful.“As a judge, I am deeply committed to upholding everyone’s rights, and I am equally committed to the rule of law in a civil society,” Briones told us, and that includes working to support misdemeanor bail reform while ensuring that repeat, violent offenders aren’t given a pass.
