Book Review: Two new volumes look to tell the 'epic' history of the Spanish in North America
Juan Evans, the last great Spanish explorer of the Americas, raised the royal banner over a Mandan settlement on the Upper Missouri in September 1796.
His orders were to befriend those natives, frustrate the unholy alliance between the British and the fledgling United States, promote commerce and pioneer a new route across the continent. But Evans had an ulterior, personal motive. He was a newly naturalized Spaniard, one who hardly spoke Spanish but was fluent in his native Welsh—part of a sodality of nationalists who aimed to pry Wales from the British crown, or, failing that, to found a new Wales in America.
