As her new piano concerto receives its world premiere, the composer reflects on diversity in music, defying musical fashions, and finding recognition later
What do a 26-year-old pianist from Kazakhstan and a 74-year-old Jamaican-born British composer have in common? Plenty, as it turns out.has written a new piano concerto for Alim Beisembayev, winner of the most recent Leeds International Piano Competition, and he gives its world premiere in April with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. It is one of Alberga’s highest-profile commissions since she was awarded the OBE in 2021.
, played by the Castalian String Quartet and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Thomas Kemp, is out in May. Her direction changed when, needing an income, she began to play the piano for dance companies. “I got bored playing for ballet classes, because often it was either set music or you had to sound like Chopin or Tchaikovsky. Then I discovered modern dance. I found it so exciting!”
“I’ve taken myself away and decided: to hell with everybody, I will write what I want to write. And if people are interested, good; if they’re not, well, I don’t care! In my first years, I was more concerned with whether something sounded enough like ‘modern music’ – ‘Do I dare put that major chord in there? Is it too old fashioned?’ But I don’t care any more.”Alberga and Bowes first met through mutual friends at the Academy.
