The parents of Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old Black man who died last year after he was put in a chokehold by police in suburban Denver and injected with a sedative, filed a wrongful death lawsuit Tuesday after the wave of protests following the death of George Floyd brought new attention to his case.McClain’s parents Sheneen McCain and Lawayne Mosley filed the lawsuit against the City of Aurora, Aurora Police Department officers and Aurora Fire Rescue paramedics.
McClain was stopped by three white police officers on Aug. 24, 2019, who responded to a call about a suspicious person wearing a ski mask and waving his arms. Police put McClain in a chokehold and paramedics gave him 500 milligrams of ketamine to calm him down.McClain’s death prompted protests in Denver and three police officers were fired last monththat appeared to show them smiling while reenacting the chokehold, however, no criminal charges have been filed in connection with the death.
McClain’s parents said they filed the civil rights lawsuit to demand justice for their son, to hold accountable the people “responsible for his murder” and to force the city to “change its longstanding pattern of brutal and racist policing,” in a statement made through their lawyers.
