Pastors who have interacted with Senator Warren said they consider her a fighter in Washington who keeps their interests—and their political and spiritual backing—in mind

By Joshua Jamerson Nov. 10, 2019 11:00 am ET BOSTON—Rev. Jeff Brown knew his endorsement, along with backing from a slate of other prominent black faith leaders here, would be a boost to Elizabeth Warren in the fall of 2012, when she was in the home stretch of her first political campaign.

“I called the mayor and said, ‘I’m going to go out on a limb,’” Rev. Brown said. “I said, ‘Let’s give her a boost and let’s endorse her.’” It isn’t yet clear how much of a role Boston-based pastors would play advocating for Ms. Warren on the 2020 campaign trail, though some interviewed for this article said they planned to stay on the sidelines for now.

She has tried to replicate that connection ahead of 2020. “For me, my life has been anchored around my faith,” Ms. Warren said at the Black Church PAC’s presidential forum in Atlanta earlier this year. “The Lord does not call on us to sit back. The Lord does not call on us just to have a good heart. The Lord calls us to act.”Rev. Miniard Culpepper of Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Boston said Ms. Warren would come to church carrying her own Bible. “It makes a statement,” Rev.

“I think it’s part of the education process for politicians to go to one of the black community’s gathering places: the church,” Rev. Culpepper said. “I think that her greatest strength, in my mind, is having a connection to clergy who have an ability to address the daily struggle of black folks,” Mr. McBride said in an interview. “I think it comes through in her comfort level in being around black people.”

So What If Elizabeth Warren Is Angry? So What If Elizabeth Warren Is Angry?“Is Elizabeth Warren ‘angry’ and antagonistic? Or are rivals dabbling in gendered criticism?” asks a recent Washington Post headline. It’s a question we should already know the answer to, given Warren’s Senate campaign in 2012, where her Republican opponent attempted to paint her as too stern and out of touch; or the dynamics of the 2016 presidential campaign; or the treatment of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other progressive women in Congress, or any basic understanding of women’s lives.
