Domestic abuse victims urged to switch off mobile phones for UK emergency alert test
The test of the emergency alert system will take place at 3pm on Sunday, with mobile phones across the UK set to receive the message. Your phone will make aNow, Citizen's Advice Hull and East Riding have issued a warning for victims of domestic abuse who may have hidden phones to try to keep themselves safe. These phones must be switched off completely at this time to make sure they do not make the sound.
If you are driving when you get the warning, you should find somewhere safe and legal to stop, before reading the alert and reacting appropriately. If there is no way to stop, you can listen to local radio to try to hear the alert.Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden has shared a video of what the alert may sound like.The government does not need to know your phone number for you to receive the alert. Instead, it will be sent out across the 4G and 5G network.
After the criticism was put to him on BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme, Mr Dowden said: “I wouldn’t accept that characterisation.
