councillor is calling for a nationwide campaign to raise awareness of endometriosis after years of suffering from the debilitating condition.
In April this year, the 36-year-old took the decision to undergo a hysterectomy to relieve her of the chronic pain. It is thought to affect around one in ten women – but on average, it takes eight years from the onset of symptoms to get a diagnosis. “There is a lack of understanding that GPs have on this issue and a lack of specialists out there to deal with it.”Devine, who has two children, said she had pushed to get the hysterectomy – which was complicated due to the extent of the endometriosis – as she did not want to face any more years of living in pain.
She added: “Menopause is hell. I now have a new battle of finding the right hormone balance for me and finding out what works and what doesn’t work.Devine will be speaking for the first time at conference when she puts forward her motion in a week tomorrow, and hopes it will lead to the launch of a national campaign on the issue.
