An EQT analysis suggests the combination of data center buildouts and additional coal retirements could generate up to 6 billion cubic feet Bcf of gas a day of incremental natural gas power demand
The data center boom is driving increased demand for natural gas in the United States, with the AI and tech industry set to account for the largest share of new demand in America. That’s the forecast of the biggest U.S. natural gas producer, EQT Corporation, which is bullish on the short and long-term demand prospects as power utilities scramble to provide electricity to the new data centers.
“This means growth in the power generation segment could exceed LNG exports as a bullish demand catalyst for the natural gas market this decade, and this structural base-low demand growth story resides at the doorstep of our asset base,” Rice said. To meet expected growth in demand in the Southeast, EQT plans to pursue an expansion of the Mountain Valley Pipeline MVP, which entered into service earlier this year, executives said on the Q1 earnings call.
