President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to be re-elected in a second-round ballot ✒️ His likely victory will widen deep divisions along political, ethnic and sectarian lines, writes Patrick Cockburn 💬 via ipaperviews

. His total votes were just below the 50 per cent required for him to avoid a run-off presidential election on 28 May, but it is unlikely that the opposition can find the votes to stop him.

. This appears to have done Erdogan surprisingly little political damage in the heartlands of the ruling AK Party in central Anatolia. Lax enforcement of building regulations by the government undoubtedly increased the death toll, but Erdogan has promised to rebuild destroyed homes within a year. The election shows that Erdogan’s blend of authoritarian but decisive rule, nationalism and religious conservatism continues to resonate with sufficient Turkish voters
