Lax enforcement of building regulations by the government undoubtedly increased the death toll, but Erdogan has promised to rebuild destroyed homes within a year. The election shows that Erdogan’s blend of authoritarian but decisive rule, nationalism and religious conservatism continues to resonate with sufficient Turkish voters
