An escaped enslaved woman made a daring escape from the Deep South of America disguised as a man, travelling thousands of miles to find refuge in Liverpool. Ellen Craft was born into slavery in the south-eastern US state of Georgia. Like many enslaved people, Ellen Craft was conceived when her mother was raped by the white man who 'owned' her. She met her future husband William in 1846 and they started plotting their journey to freedom.
Then-President Millard Fillmore intervened and authorised the use of military force, if required, to bring about their return south. In December 1850, they decided to cross the Atlantic. The couple crossed the border into Canada and boarded the Liverpool-bound Cambria. William later wrote in their memoir: 'It was not until we stepped ashore at Liverpool that we were free from every slavish fear.
