After May 24, dozens of parents and siblings put images of the shooting victims on their skin. They wanted others to see the tattoos but they did it, in many ways, for themselves.

Almost a year later, these families still live their lives in T-shirts, buttons or wrist bands bearing the name or image of a child or sibling — visual artifacts that help them repeat to the world who that person was.And most have a version of it on their skin, having decided that a tattoo — painful but permanent — was the best way to memorialize who they lost.

It took time. She had to find the right artist, and Martin Pacheco of San Antonio was in demand. The tattoo stretches the length of her upper left arm and is a rainbow-colored reproduction of Lexi’s work, with her handwriting, “The Best Mom,” at the top and, “I love my mom By: Lexi” below.“She was vibrant, very colorful. She loved bright lights in her room. Her style was colorful, bright, just like her,” Rubio said.

“With tattoos, at first you can’t stop looking at them, but then they just become a part of you and then you are just like, ‘Oh, that is the way my arm looks,’ but not in this case. Every time I get a glance, it just reminds me of her and I need that. I need the constant reminder. I miss her a lot,” Rubio said.

“Nothing can ever hurt me as much as I’ve been hurt losing Tess,” Mata said. “Getting a tattoo is nothing compared to what she went through. … Something that is going to symbolize her for the rest of my life on me is worth doing.” Jacklyn Cazares, 9, and Eliahna Torres, 10, Tess’s friends who also were killed in the shooting, loved butterflies, too.

Her mom and sister also got an M. Next, Rodriguez got Maite’s name spelled vertically on her neck, a small green heart at the end — a heart because Maite’s name means love. Green was her favorite color.Scholarship honors Uvalde victim who wanted to study marine biology at A&M-Corpus Christi
