European Union member states pledged to suspend weapons exports to Turkey in response to the northern Syria incursion, but stopped short of a formal EU-wide arms embargo

EU member states on Monday pledged to suspend weapons exports to Turkey in response to Ankara's incursion into northern Syria, but stopped short of implementing a formal EU-wide arms embargo.

At a meeting of the bloc's foreign ministers in Luxembourg, EU countries also agreed to prepare a list of potential sanctions over Turkey's drilling activities off Cyprus., member states condemned Turkey's military operation in Syria and committed to"strong national positions regarding their arms export policy to Turkey."

EU diplomats say that though this falls short of the EU-wide arms embargo sought by some member states, the effect is the same, while allowing for faster implementation. Several countries, including Germany, France, Finland and Sweden, have imposed arms embargoes of their own over the past few days. Turkey launched an incursion into northern Syria last week aimed at driving Syrian Kurdish fighters, which Ankara considers to be terrorists, away from the Syrian-Turkish border. The operation has already displaced some 100,000 people,
