A Euclid man was sentenced for stealing from dozens of elderly residents in a sweepstakes scam.CLEVELAND, Ohio— A Euclid man who admitted to fleecing elderly residents by telling them that they had won a lottery or sweepstakes was sentenced Thursday to 18 months in prison.
He told them that to claim the prize, they would first have to pay an upfront fee or tax on the winnings, according to prosecutors. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian McDonough wrote in court records that Spencer directed people to mail checks to his wife’s home, then deposited them in his bank account.
