The European Commission has charged Valve, along with 5 games publishers, of unlawful geoblocking

At issue is the practice of geoblocking, whereby publishers place geographical restrictions on sales to make sure that consumers don't buy games in cheaper countries for use at home.

"The Commission's preliminary view is that Valve and the five PC video game publishers entered into bilateral agreements to prevent consumers from purchasing and using PC video games acquired elsewhere than in their country of residence ," says the Commission."This is against EU antitrust rules." "In a true Digital Single Market, European consumers should have the right to buy and play video games of their choice regardless of where they live in the EU," she says.

"The Regulation protects online customers against unjustified discrimination by traders by virtue of their nationality, place of residence or place of establishment,""It means, for example, that where businesses purport to make their services generally available online, they must ensure that EU-based customers enjoy equal rights of access to those services and that it is not more difficult for customers in certain countries to access those services than those in others.
