The European Parliament agreed to rules mandating all phones, tablets and cameras have to be equipped with a USB-C charger. The rules, opposed by Apple, will force manufacturers to provide a single charger by the end of 2024, and laptops by 2026.
The rules, opposed by Apple AAPL, +2.38%, will force manufacturers to provide a single charger by the end of 2024, and mandate it to laptops by the spring of 2026. The parliament overwhelmingly approved the rule by a 602-to-13 vote.
The parliament in a news release said it will subsequently adopt interoperability requirements for wireless charging as that becomes more prevalent. The lawmakers estimated the move will save up to 250 million euros a year on unnecessary charger purchases.
